A vehicle breakdown is stressful, but the time spent waiting for help doesn't have to be wasted. Here are five productive and safe things you can do while waiting for your tow truck to arrive.

1. Ensure Your Safety

Your top priority is safety. If you can, move your vehicle to the shoulder or as far out of the flow of traffic as possible. Turn on your hazard lights. If it's dark or visibility is poor, stay inside your vehicle with your seatbelt on. If you must exit the vehicle, do so from the side away from traffic.

2. Gather Your Documents

Use the time to get your paperwork in order. You'll likely need your driver's license, vehicle registration, and insurance information. Having these ready will speed up the process once the tow truck operator arrives and if you need to file an insurance claim.

3. Inform Necessary Parties

Let family, friends, or colleagues know about your situation and your approximate location. If you're going to be late for an appointment or work, this is the perfect time to make those calls or send those texts so no one is left worrying.

4. Prepare Your Vehicle for Towing

Make sure your vehicle is ready to be towed. Straighten your steering wheel, release the parking brake unless you're on a hill, and take any personal belongings you'll need with you. This might include your phone, wallet, house keys, and any valuables.

5. Document the Scene

If your breakdown was the result of an accident, take pictures of the scene and any damage to your vehicle and other property. This documentation can be invaluable for insurance purposes. Note the time, location, and weather conditions.
